Ballet BC dancers show their choreographic chops at Take Form, March 31 and April 1
Sidney Chuckas, Michael Garcia, Orlando Harbutt, Jacalyn Tatro, and Jacob Williams create short works
Ballet BC presents Take Form at the BMO Theatre Centre’s Newmont Stage March 31 and April 1
VANCOUVER DANCE FANS are used to seeing Ballet BC dancers perform onstage, but the new Take Form show will put their choreographic talents on display as well.
On March 31 and April 1 at the BMO Theatre Centre, the troupe will present six world premieres created, produced, and performed by the company’s artists.
Dancers Sidney Chuckas, Michael Garcia, Orlando Harbutt, Jacalyn Tatro, and Jacob Williams, as well as emerging artist Ben Waters, will debut short creations. Company artists have overseen everything from lighting and set design to costumes.
The presentation hearkens back to pandemic-era early 2021, when Ballet BC artistic director Medhi Walerski was looking for ways to keep Ballet BC dancers inspired and in motion. That’s when the troupe launched a digital version of Take Form—a creatively charged evening of works that ranged from the kaleidoscopically surreal to the clubby and funny.
The new live rendition, with a new slate of talents, promises to be equally innovative: one image from new dancer Jacalyn Tatro's piece features muddy clay (see above). The showcase is a chance not only to see a new side to the artists, but to see them perform up close, in a more intimate venue. Tickets are just $25, with general seating.
