BC and Yukon Book Prizes announce 2021 winners

THE WEST COAST Book Prize Society has announced the winners of the 37th annual B.C. and Yukon Book Prizes.

Winners are selected through a juried system and were announced at an online gala on September 25.

Shaena Lambert won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize for Petra (Random House Canada).

The Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize went to Billy-Ray Belcourt for A History of My Brief Body (Hamish Hamilton Canada/Penguin Random House Canada).

Taking home the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize was Michael Prior, for Burning Province (McClelland & Stewart).

The Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize went to Kwanlin Dün First Nation for Kwanlin Dün (Figure 1 Publishing).

Sara Cassidy won the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize for Genius Jolene, illustrated by Charlene Chua (Orca Book Publishers)

The Christie Harris Illustrated Children’s Literature Prize went to Rina Singh and illustrator Ellen Rooney for Grandmother School (Orca Book Publishers).

Joel Bakan, author of The New Corporation (Allen Lane Canada/Penguin Canada) won the Jim Deva Prize for Writing that Provokes.

Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award was given to Robert Amos, for The E. J. Hughes Book of Boats (TouchWood Editions).

In addition to the eight awards for the annual prize categories, two awards were given to writers for their body of work and contributions to the literary community.

Joseph A. Dandurand, a poet, playwright, storyteller, and Kwantlen First Nation member, received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence.

Joanna Lilley won the Borealis Prize: The Commissioner of Yukon Award for Literary Contribution.

The BC and Yukon Book Prizes were established in 1985 to celebrate the achievements of BC and Yukon writers and publishers. The prizes are administered and awarded by a non-profit society that represents all facets of the publishing and writing community.
