Vancouver’s Asian communities have long helped shape the face of the city. Vancouver Chamber Choir’s BRIGHT MOON 明月 concert on June 3 celebrates this essential part of the diversity of Vancouver, the history, cultures, and many languages.

As guest conductor, Singaporean Vancouverite Jennifer Tham will take the podium to lead the Vancouver Chamber Choir on this journey. The Vancouver Chamber Choir is honoured to welcome the Vancouver Chinese Choir Association 溫哥 華國韻合唱團, under the direction of Ling Lu, as special guests for this performance.

BRIGHT MOON 明月 will feature a collection of music from the overseas Chinese, including Chen Yi’s meditation on estrangement and the cycle of the moon, Three Poems from the Song Dynasty. A symbol of loneliness and longing, the moon has a special place in Chinese poetry, seen to connect those separated by geographical distance. Homesick while studying in Canada, Steve Ho composed Moonlight Lullaby, a quodlibet of a Cantonese folk lullaby and Blue Moon—the moon seen from both east and west. The traditional and modern jostle together in Austin Yip’s Cik Cuk Ding Ding, and a sense of place is felt in Edgar Macapili’s The Mountains Sing, with text in the language of the Indigenous Siraya people of Taiwan. The Happiness of Fish, by Zechariah Goh, is a setting of the Taoist contemplation on the joy of being, a theme repainted in full colour by Nan-Chang Chien’s I Am Flying. One Black Spike by Vancouver composer Jocelyn Morlock opens the concert in homage to the thousands of Chinese men who worked on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway from the 1880s and made British Columbia their home.

Join the Vancouver Chamber Choir for BRIGHT MOON 明月, in celebrating Chinese, Taiwanese, and Singaporean music on June 3 at 7:30 pm at Fraserview Church (11295 Mellis Drive, Richmond).

Although provincial audience capacity restrictions and vaccination scans have been lifted, we invite our patrons to take whatever health measures they deem necessary to feel safe during this performance.
