LEGENDARY BRAZILIAN-BORN guitar virtuoso, percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, and vocalist Celso Machado will explore the African, Indigenous, and European origins of his art alongside a stellar lineup of local artists in an upcoming special one-time livestream event. Jongo, Choro, and Afro-Samba: Roots & Branches of Brazilian Music with Celso Machado and Guests livestreams from the Orpheum Theatre on November 14, an evening unlike any other on the cultural calendar.

Presented by the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre (VLACC), the show will see Machado—a charismatic Vancouver-based performer who was born into a musical family in São Paulo—journey through Bossa Nova, Afro-Samba, the chamber-like Choro, and more obscure musical offshoots such as Jongo. Also known as Caxambu or Tabu, the genre is derived from dances performed by slaves who worked the coffee plantations in the Paraíba Valley between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Machado will present two Jongos and will also put down his guitar to play various African-derived percussion instruments including the indigenous Berimbau, which has a distinctly Brazilian bow-and-gourd sound. Joining him on-stage are singer-guitarist Sara Magal, classical guitarist Josh Searles, veteran percussionist Liam MacDonald, and martial-arts performers of Aché Brasil under Mestre Eclilson de Jesus.

Tickets for the 8 pm performance ($10 before November 1 or $15 per household) and more information are at VLACC.
