MÚSICA POPULAR BRASILEIRA, which translates from Portuguese to “Brazilian popular music”, is a genre capable of setting a celebratory tone no matter the time or place. Often abbreviated as MPB, the style pulls influences from the regional music of Brazil—think high-energy rhythmic samba, slowed-down melodic samba-canção, and upbeat drum-heavy baião—and melds them with foreign jazz and rock instrumentals.

In appreciation of warm summer soirées, the Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre is dedicating a whole evening to MPB at The Cultch on July 6. Brazilian Summer Night will feature four artists—Celso Machado, Amphibioux, Sara Magal, and Alberto Salgado—in a lineup that celebrates multicultural fusion.

State of São Paulo–born, Gibsons-based guitarist Machado will open the show with his global sound that blends everything from rhythmic Brazilian afoxé to Egyptian maqsoum folk. Amphibioux will take to the spotlight next; the quartet composed of trombone player Choenden Kyirong, upright bassist Julia Farry, pianist Mauricio Zani, and drummer Tiago Cavalcanti draws from roots among the likes of joyful choro, hip-swivelling forró, bossa nova, and jazz.

Brazilian singer-songwriter Magal, who is based in Vancouver, will follow suit with her signature style-spanning vocals. Her tunes will open the floor for finale performer Salgado, who is flying in from Brazil with his band for a special appearance at the event. The celebrated singer and multi-instrumentalist will headline the evening with his colourful sound that innovatively weaves together traditional Brazilian styles with Latin American and African rhythms.

Salgado secured the prestigious Brazilian Music Award (Prêmio da Música Brasileira) for best regional album with his record Cabaça d’Água in 2017 and has performed with notable music-industry figures Arnaldo Antunes, Chico César, and Arthur Maia. He is set to play tracks from Cabaça d’Água at The Cultch.

Vancouver isn’t Salgado’s only Canadian stop this month—for those located in the east, he will tour the album to Toronto’s DROM Taberna on July 7 and then to Montreal’s Festival International Nuits d'Afrique on July 11.
