NOW, ISN’T THAT REFRESHING in the sometimes too-serious world of classical music: New York City’s young and energized Isidore String Quartet considers their ensemble their own “playground”. Their mission statement? “Joyful, accessible, and intimate experiences that create community through in-depth relationships and explore the power of the collective to uplift the individual.”

That means you shouldn’t be surprised to find a smile on your face as you watch this fab foursome—all in their early 20s—take the stage for the Friends of Chamber Music’s final concert of the season at the Vancouver Playhouse.

And what a diverse program it will be for the quartet—Seattle-born violinist Adrian Steele; Juilliard-trained violinist Phoenix Avalon; violist and visual artist Devin Moore; and cello sensation Joshua McClendon, on a 1697 instrument.

On the roster: Mozart’s String Quartet No. 19 in C Major, “Dissonance”; American jazz pianist Billy Childs’s String Quartet No. 3, “Unrequited”; and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat Major.

These guys are bent on revisiting, rediscovering, and reinvigorating repertoire, and they’ve been on an accelerated career rise since winning the renowned Banff International String Quartet Competition in 2022. They’ve been praised for their sharp, lively, full-body playing—feeding off each other’s energy. (Check out the video below for just a small taste of what’s in store.)

Here’s a chance to catch the group before they blast into the stratosphere—and to have a bit of fun along with them at a classical-music concert.
