The Audain Art Museum presents Dana Claxton as part of its Tuesday Night Talks, March 2 at 8 pm

Imposing and striking, Dana Claxton’s Paint Up #1 looks its viewer directly in the eye, asserting the importance of Indigenous spirituality in a contemporary, consumerist urban society.

The large-scale portrait of Joseph Paul, a ceremonial Salish Black Face dancer and pow-wow dancer from the Musqueam nation dates back to 2009. The C-print on archival paper, part of the Audain Art Museum’s colleciton, will be the centre of discussion at the season finale of its Tuesday Night Talks, hosted by the museum’s director and chief curator, Dr. Curtis Collins.

The celebrated Vancouver multimedia artist will be on hand for the livestream, via Zoom.

The Hunkpapa Lakota artist, raised in Moose Jaw, is known for socio-politically charged work centred on ideas of spirituality, identity, body, and beauty. For almost three decades, her videos, photographs, and other creations have been exhibited everywhere from the Museum of Modern Art in New York City to the National Gallery of Canada and the Sydney Biennale. Last year, she won a Governor-General’s Award for artistic achievement in visual art.

Remember to pre-register for the Zoom link, and feel free to submit advance questions for the interactive talk.
