Dance//Novella pairs an intimate duet and a nine-performer piece at STANCE + Other Works, July 27
Founders Racheal Prince and Brandon Alley explore loss and empowerment in one-night double bill
Dance Novella presents STANCE + Other Works on July 27 at the Annex
AS ONE OF VANCOUVER’S newest dance companies, Dance//Novella has been attracting attention for artfully realized pieces. Think When the Walls Come Down, the work that integrated ASL and multimedia storytelling in April of this year. This week offers a one-night chance to see its two founding artists’ newest works.
Racheal Prince and Brandon Alley met as dancers in Ballet BC—where they were both standouts on stage—and have now embarked on their own creative path with the new company that they launched in 2019. The partners in life and art are known for their emotionally expressive duets—and Thursday’s performance includes the premiere of their new two-hander The Sound Of Disappearing, a moving exploration of loss and grief.
But the show also includes the nine-dancer-strong STANCE, built in collaboration with its performers Mia Pelayo, Yuha Tomita, Daria Mkhaylyuk, Kiera Hill, Alexis Fletcher, Bryn Bridgen, Nasiv Sall, Nancy Li, and Oksana Maslechko. The creation delves into themes of strength, empowerment, and growth, especially as they relate to protest and social change in our world today; see the symbolic use of big, white flags in the work.
For a more specific idea of what this piece, which premiered at the Polygon Theatre earlier this year, is about, make sure to attend the talkback, where the artists will dig into the inspiration for the piece in an open discussion with the audience after the show.
