Dancing on the Edge announces 2024 lineup featuring more than 30 performances of cutting-edge works
36th annual festival of contemporary dance to present world premieres, Western Canadian debuts, and works-in-progress throughout Metro Vancouver from June 13 to 22
THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED Dancing on the Edge Festival is back for its 36th year, and it has just released programming details for the 2024 event running from June 13 to 22.
This year’s festival features more than 30 performances, including world premieres, Western Canadian debuts, and works-in-progress from some of the most sought-after contemporary choreographers in Canada.
Kicking off this year’s DOTE is the world premiere of Company 605’s latest work, lossy, co-presented with SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs. Other world premieres include EDAM’s Dead Weighting, Clala Dance Project’s Uchi うち, Helen Walkley’s blocking, and Furious Grace Dance Theatre’s Gravity in Your Eyes.
Gorgeous Tongue by Montreal’s Lara Kramer Danse will have its Western Canadian premiere, while Wéi (成为) by Toronto’s tiger princess dance projects will have its B.C. premiere.
Having Vancouver premieres are Behind Veiled Eyes by Prince George’s Method Dance Society and Lasterday by Toronto choreographer Hanna Kiel of Kaeja d’Dance.
The festival also features OURO Collective’s 7y98D; Kelly McInnes’s Late Stage Remedy, Calder White’s Nowing; Simran Sachar’s Act Twenty Five; FakeKnot’s Croquis, since then by Toronto’s Peggy Baker, Belle Spirale Dance Projects’ assemble; and Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY’s SALT.
“Dancing on the Edge is recognized nationally for the kinesthetic ripples and blasts of energetic waves brought to the stage each year by a wide range of artistic visions and experiences,” DOTE’s artistic producer Donna Spencer says in a press release. “This year, we are pleased to honour one of Canada's great dance and contact improvisation creators, Peter Bingham, and share his work with the presentation of EDAM's Dead Weighting. Peter’s body of work has had such an impactful ripple on many of the artists participating in this year's festival. We are also excited to offer what was a work-in-progress at last year’s festival as a world premiere this year with Company 605's lossy; and to bring new choreographic voices such as Anya Saugstad, Clala Dance Project, and Simran Sachar to the festival. Stirring things up is in DOTE’s DNA, and we can’t wait for audiences to experience this year’s lineup.”
The complete schedule can be viewed here. Venues include Firehall Arts Centre, Scotiabank Dance Centre, and SFU’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, as well as off-site presentations at select Vancouver parks.
