B.C. authors among finalists revealed for the 2024 Governor General’s Literary Awards
Vancouver’s Danny Ramadan and Burnaby poet Brandi Bird are among the local nominated scribes
THE FINALISTS FOR the 2024 Governor General’s Literary Awards have been announced, and several B.C. authors made the list.
In the poetry category, Burnaby’s Brandi Bird is a finalist for The All + Flesh, while Chilliwack’s Bradley Peters is nominated for Sonnets from a Cell.
Vancouver’s own Danny Ramadan is nominated in the non-fiction category for Crooked Teeth: A Queer Syrian Refugee Memoir. So is Fort St. John’s Helen Knott for Becoming a Matriarch.
Two B.C. writers made the shortlist in the young people’s literature—text category: Campbell River’s Shari Green for Song of Freedom, Song of Dreams and New Westminster’s Li Charmaine Anne for Crash Landing.
Vancouver’s Adam de Souza is nominated in the young people’s literature—illustrated books category for The Gulf.
A total of 70 books are finalists, with the winners in 14 categories (seven in English and seven in French) being announced on November 13. The writers, translators, and illustrators of each winning book receive a $25,000 prize. Publishers receive $3,000 to promote their winning book, and finalists receive $1,000 each.
Gail Johnson is a Vancouver-based journalist who has earned local and national nominations and awards for her work. She is a certified Gladue Report writer via Indigenous Perspectives Society in partnership with Royal Roads University and is a member of a judging panel for top Vancouver restaurants.
