Lively Roma jazz as Lache Cercel and ensemble kick off Shadbolt Centre for the Arts' live season, September 23
Group mixes together sounds from around the world
The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts presents Lache Cercel live and online on September 23.
THE SHADBOLT CENTRE for the Arts is launching a live season of shows with the lively Roma jazz sounds of Lache Cercel.
Violin master Cercel created the new musical genre by merging Eastern influences with Western musicology. Joining him onstage are vocalist Laura Crema, guitarist Don Ogilvie, vioninist Kit Eakle, and Montreal accordion legend Sergiu Popa.
The dancers cross cultures as well, with tap sensation Jeffrey Dawson and belly dancer Elisabeth Lesztak.
Cercel’s unique hybrid blends traditional Eastern European melodies, swingi-jazz harmonies, and a bit of Egyptian percussion.
He and his Roma Swing Ensemble illustrate the melting pot of Canada’s world-music scene, bringing together elite musicians from around the world who have chosen to settle here.
Cercel himself hails from Romania, where he was one of his homeland’s premier musicians, training at the Academy of Arts in Bucharest, serving as soloist with the Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, and, in 1986, receiving an award as the “Artist of the People” from the Romanian government.
The bandleader’s music at the Shadbolt show is deeply rooted in Roma traditions, tracing its history of tragedy, struggle and ultimate survival and resilience.
