Monsoon Festival: Leading singers Pav Dharia and Gurtêj, aka NY Virtuoso, hit Punjabi Market Live, August 27
South Asian Arts Society’s free street party also features dance, drag, food, and more
Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts presents Punjabi Market Live on August 27 from 12 to 6 pm at Punjabi Market (main stage located at corner of Main Street and 49th Avenue)
PAV DHARIA AND Gurtêj, aka NY Virtuoso, are star attractions at this year’s Punjabi Market Live. The free outdoor street party is a key event of the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts, where Main Street will be shut down between 49th and 51st Avenues all afternoon.
Pav Daria and Gurtêj, aka NY Virtuoso, are big draws in an already stellar lineup of artists.
Daria is a Sydney, Australia-based singer, choreographer, and cinematographer. His 2017 single, “Na Ja”, became a hit name among Punjabi music fans around the world, racking up more than 300 million online views. Other popular tracks include “Samne Rehni”, off his album Solo, and “Nahi Karna Viah”. He has a unique style that he deliberately makes not to sound lke “old” Punjabi or Bollywood music, he tells the Times of India.
Gurtêj, aka NY Virtuoso, is a New Delhi-born singer-songwriter based in Long Island, New York, who draws in part from the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Marvyn Gaye. He melds rock with R&B, too, writing songs of love and life, and has performed with artists like AP Dhillon and Eloise.
Among the other musical acts taking part are sitarist Anju Bedi, Surya Brass Band, and singer Cinnamon Sandhu.
Elsewhere, watch for Jolene Queen Sloan, “the Premier Punjabi Drag Queen serving Indian Glamour in Canada”, as her Instagram describes.
Dance troupes Varnnitha and Pooja Classic Fusion Dance are on the boks, as is Rangla Punjab Arts Academy. Sufi stars Varinder Vicky and Navreet Kaur will also be doing their thing.
Coast Salish performance group Coastal Wolfpack (Tsatsu Stalqayu) is another highlight. Then there’s Shan E Punjab Arts Club, multidisciplinary artist Dashmeet Singh, and Club Mumbai.
Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Ji Gatka Akhara is a Surrey-based organization whose work includes promoting and teaching warrior traditions of the Khalsa.
DJ Molly and other DJS will be spinning tracks nonstop.
Also on offer: free chai and jalebis, a popular Indian sweet, as well as various options from local food trucks. The Vancouver Canucks & Warriors Kids Zone is there to keep tots happy. The event is emceed By: CBC's Baneet Braich.
