Teen Angst sees performers read from their old journals and diaries at the Shadbolt, September 21
The comedy revisits cast members’ hormone-fuelled puberty-era days
The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts presents Teen Angst on September 21 at the Studio Theatre
IF YOU COULD look back on your teenage diaries now, would you end up just cringing at all the drama and emotion? A show at the Shadbolt features several performers who will read verbatim from their own old journals, to hilarious effect.
Teen Angst is produced and hosted by Sara Bynoe, who has been running the production with a revolving roster of guests since 2000. She joins a cast made up of Brent Constantine, Freya Rose Fox, Joe MacLeod, Jordy Matheson, Vienna Roberts, Marlene Swindinski, Lindsay Wu, and Krystal Yee, who all share some of their most embarrassing entries from their actual hormone-fuelled puberty-era notebooks. Expect to laugh out loud at their earnest poetry and existential crises while thinking back to your own teenage turmoil.
Teen Angst got its start in Calgary in 2000 with a live event series and a website, and has been drawing fans in Vancouver ever since. The website’s blog entries were turned into a book that was published in 2005, and then Bynoe turned that into a sold-out stage show for the High Performance Rodeo in Calgary. The artist's solo show called Teen Angst Poetry featured her own poems, becoming a hit at the Toronto Fringe in 2007, Bumbershoot in 2008, and the Edinburgh Free Fringe in 2011.
