What do you get when you add one composer to one musician and one filmmaker, plus other artists?

The whole should be greater than the sum of its parts, as the Turning Point Ensemble announces it’s launching the first three films of  1+1+1+… on January 23, 2021. The new-music group is describing the innovative COVID-era series of creations as “an artistic chain of expression”.

The first “one” in the equation is the performer, the second is the composer, and the third is the filmmaker. Each adds his or her interpretation to what’s been created before, resulting in a series of five-minute art films.

In total, there will be 15 short films.

But there’s more to add to the experience: musicians will sometimes collaborate with artists from other disciplines, such as dancers or visual artists.

“Every one of the works will be an intimate representation of the situation we are living in now,” said Turning Point artistic director Owen Underhill in the press announcement. “At the completion, the objective is to have created a body of compositions that exist as films representing both an individual and a collective TPE legacy for the future, with a potential to reach an audience around the world.”

The first film, called Synapses, is composed by Bob Pritchard for solo oboe, dancer with LED spine, and Max/MSP processing. David Owen plays the oboe, while Emmalena Fredriksson is the featured dancer/choreographer and Sean Patrick Shaul directs.

The second is Cone, Underhill’s composition for solo violin, featuring Mary Sokol Brown on the instrument; Shaul directs. And the third work in the first batch is Shared Solitude, Réjean Marois’ work for bassoon, piano, and footwork, featuring musician Ingrid Chiang, with Shaul in the director’s seat.

Works were filmed between the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts and the Annex.

The first three films are set to launch on Saturday, January 23 at 5pm. Details and tickets are here.
