VANCOUVER OPERA IS offering a free concert in honour of National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21. Voices of the Solstice features M’Girl, Russell Wallace, and musica intima in an exchange of cultures and musical styles.
The event is being hosted by Renae Morriseau, who is Cree and Saulteaux from the Treaty 1 Territory of Manitoba and who has worked in film, television, and music across Canada since the early ’80s. Morriseau is cofounder with Sheila Maracle of M’Girl, an Indigenous women’s ensemble that specializes in percussive-based hand-drum songs. Wallace is a composer, producer, and traditional singer from the Lil’wat Nation who composes music for film, theatre, and dance. musica intima is a 12-member vocal ensemble known for its a cappella performances that operates on a shared leadership model.
The concert takes place at 8 pm on the June 21 solstice at Martha Lou Henley Rehearsal Hall at 1955 McLean Drive. Voices of the Solstice is part of Vancouver Opera’s VOICES: Free Concert Series, which showcases underrepresented voices in the realms of opera and musical performance.
