The Vancouver Recital Society streams a concert by Benjamin Baker and Timothy Ridout on March 24 at 10 am

VANCOUVER RECITAL SOCIETY artistic director Leila Getz has long made a name for introducing local audiences to young classical names before they become mega-stars (hello, Sheku).

And so it should thrill the society’s devoted fans that it’s going to continue bringing us surprising, fresh talent via an online format this spring. VRS has joined forces with the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) to present four shows with some of the most exciting talent that group has nurtured.

The kickoff filmed concert features in-demand violinist Benjamin Baker and violist Timothy Ridout in a lively and unexpected program that hops between centuries: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Duo for violin and viola in G; Jean Sibelius’s Duo for violin and viola in C; Bohuslav Martinu’s Three Madrigals for violin and viola; and Johan Halvorsen’s Sarabande con variazione (on a theme of Handel).

The New Zealand-born Baker has been on a steady rise since winning First Prize at the 2016 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York; he’s been praised by the New York Times for his “virtuosity, refinement and youthful exuberance”.

British viola virtuoso Ridout, meanwhile, has been one to watch since he was selected BBC New Generation Artist in 2019. The Gramaphone has raved about him having “a gorgeous tone, a thoughtful approach to phrasing and an infectious sense of impetuosity”.
