For seventeen years, DanceHouse has connected Vancouver audiences to the international world of dance.

Founded in 2008 by local producers Barbara Clausen and Jim Smith, DanceHouse formed to fill a void for world-class dance of scale coming into the city.

Since then, it has presented vibrant and inspiring companies from Canada and beyond at the Vancouver Playhouse—including celebrated works by companies including Compagnie Marie Chouinard (Montreal), Dorrance Dance (US), Hofesh Shechter Company (UK), and Vancouver’s own Kidd Pivot. It introduced local audiences to some of the hottest troupes from far corners of the world—including Brazil’s cutting-edge Grupo Corpo, Senegal’s École des Sables, and Australia’s mighty Circa.

The culturally diverse programming aims not just to foster a wider appreciation of dance here on the West Coast, but to challenge and inspire audience members. It’s become a showcase for work that fuses disciplines like theatre and multimedia with dance, or that intersects with culturally rooted styles. Sometimes that means the world-premiere of a hotly-anticipated new work (Kidd Pivot’s sold out productions of Revisor (2019) and Assembly Hall (2023), or an explosion of physicality (think Spanish Compañía Rocío Molina’s avant-garde theatricality, peerless technique, and reinvention of flamenco as we know it).

Led today by artistic and executive director Jim Smith, DanceHouse has become an integral part of the cultural fabric of the city. The organization proudly works with local community partners including Blackout Art Society, Matriarchs Uprising, Vancouver Latin American Cultural Centre, and Vancouver Tap Festival, and co-presenters such as Dancers of Damelahamid, Indian Summer Festival, The Cultch, Vancouver Flamenco Festival and many more.

It has also built a full range of engagement opportunities beyond the stage. These include Speaking of Dance pre-show talks, a rare opportunity for audiences to hear from and engage directly with visiting artists and their representatives, masterclasses with world-class artists, post-show socials with visiting dance companies, and ticket discounts for a variety of local community members such as youth and young adults.
