The seventh annual event celebrates cultural diversity, rejuvenates the spirit of Hogan’s Alley
African Descent Festival takes place July 17 and 18 from 11 am to 9 pm PDT at Thornton Park (1166 Main Street) and via Facebook Live.
NOW IN ITS seventh year, the African Descent Festival celebrates the cultural diversity of people of African descent in Vancouver while encouraging a spirit of unity among all ethnic groups and communities. For 2021, the fest is taking place in person and online.
Among the performers are Guinean-born multi-instrumentalist and JUNO winner Alpha Yaya Diallo; reggae-dancehall and Afro-pop artist Mr. Fantastic; JUNO-winning Okavango Orchestra; indie soul band the Boom Booms; Cuban-Canadian musician Alex Cuba; Esther and Ezekiel, winners of East Africa’s Got Talent 2019; and more.
Founded by community builder and event planner Yasin Kiraga Misago, the festival seeks to rejuvenate the spirit of Hogan’s Alley. On July 17 from 10 am to 12:30 pm PDT, it is hosting a Black Strathcona Walking Tour.
The United Nations has declared 2015 to 2024 as the International Decade for People of African Descent, providing a framework for “the United Nations, Member States, civil society and all other relevant actors to join together with people of African descent and take effective measures for the implementation of the programme of activities in the spirit of recognition, justice and development.”
