Chutzpah! Festival unveils program of dance world premieres, multimedia installations, and more, November 3 to 24
Tickets on sale for Israeli music star Liraz, comedians Joel Chasnoff and Liz Glazer, dancers Vanessa Goodman and Shay Kuebler, and more
THE CHUTZPAH! Festival has just announced the lineup for November 3 to 24, with a full live component of music, theatre, comedy, dance and multimedia arts. A few productions will also show on line.
Among the big visiting names are Israeli-American standup comedian Joel Chasnoff, American comedian Liz Glazer, Israeli drag queens Ziona Patriot and Talula Bonet, and Israeli singer, songwriter, and actor Liraz Charhi. Venues include the Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre, Wosk Auditorium, and the Sidney & Gertrude Zack Gallery.
The fest has a big roster of Canadian and local talent in its 22nd edition.
The program boasts a bunch of world premieres by top local dance talents: Ne.Sans Opera & Dance’s Hourglass (November 5 and 6); Alexis Fletcher and Arash Khakpour’s All my being is a dark verse (November 9 and 10); and Vanessa Goodman/Action at a Distance’s Echo Chamber (November 21 and 22, in a double bill with Shay Kuebler/Radical System Art’s Ghost Scripts).
November 17, Music at the Center of the River joins master musicians David Buchbinder, Mark Rubin, and Michael Ward-Bergeman, who intertwine the music of the Jews, Roma, African Americans (New Orleans and the Delta), the Riverboats, plus “the Salons and the Laboratories of the Mad Scientist”.
And artist Maya Ciarrocchi and composer Andrew Conklin bring their video-sound installation and performance Site: Yizkor here; it explores the concept of lost people and places.
The festical kicks off opening night with Not a Day Goes By, featuring City Opera Vancouver with a tribute to Stephen Sondheim; singers include mezzos Amy Gartner and Cecilly Day, tenor Tainui Kuru, and baritone Jacob Leonard.
Concert highlights include Liraz’s November 23 show at the Rothstein Theatre, with music from Only You 're Allowed, a collaboration of Israeli writers with Persian talents.
In the realm of theatre, don’t miss Yankl & Der Beanstalk, a Yiddish holiday panto co-created by Tamara Micner, a theatre artist who lives in London England, and hails from Vancouver. It’s part of the DBLSPK Program co-presented with rice & beans theatre, November 7 at the Rothstein.
And Chutzpah! gets its Pride on with an evening called Celebrating Queer Jewish Comedy. Hosted by Yenta, it features Glazer with Israel’s drag-star “Holy Sisters”, November 24 at the Rothstein.
Amid other highlights are two family shows: Grammy award-winning children's performer Dan Zanes and Haitian-American music therapist/jazz vocalist Claudia Zanes perform a concert on November 13, and Axis Theatre brings Th 'owxyia: The Hungry Feast Dish to the fest on November 19.
