DOXA HAS ANNOUNCED THE lineup of Special Presentations for its 21st edition, running with in-person screenings and online from May 5 to 15. More programming will be unveiled April 13.

The opening film will be Fire of Love, directed by Sara Dosa, which follows volcanologist couple Katia and Maurice Krafft as they travel the world. It incorporates astonishing archival footage shot by the Kraffts themselves. It will screen May 7 at The Playhouse.

Elsewhere, the fest’s Justice Forum programming stream, copresented by SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs, will spotlight Love in the Time of Fentanyl, directed by Colin Askey, who follows the Overdose Prevention Society for years as it struggles to support people in the Downtown Eastside during the opioid crisis.

Local DOXA alumna Teresa Alfeld returns with Doug and the Slugs and Me, this year’s closing film. It’s an intimate biography of the legendary musician and East Van dad Doug Bennett, from his formative years to the bittersweet end. Alfeld’s brings her unique perspective as a childhood best friend of one of Bennett’s daughters.

Elsewhere, Henri Pardo’s Dear Jackie is an enduring portrait of Black life in Montreal, and a letter to the titular Jackie Robinson. The Special Presentation marks the 13th edition of DOXA’s Rated Y for Youth program.

Special Presentation films will include either a pre-recorded or live-streamed Q&A, or in-theatre conversation with filmmakers. Watch the DOXA site for further details.
