Slice of Life Art Gallery presents Ed Hill on January 15 at 7 pm at NEXTDOOR (1638 Venables Street).

ED HILL BROKE ground with his hour-long comedy show, Candy and Smiley, becoming the first comedian of Taiwanese-Canadian descent to release a full one-hour comedy special with Comedy Dynamics.

Streaming on Amazon Prime and Apple TV and having made it onto Paste Magazine’s top 10 comedy specials of 2021, the show gets its title from the names his parents chose for themselves when they immigrated to Canada from Taipei, Taiwan when he was 10 years old.

“When you move from a country that doesn’t speak English to a country that does speak English, you can pick a new name,” Hill says in the official trailer for the show. “So my parents could have named themselves anything—anything. So my mom named herself Candy, like the dessert. And my dad named himself Smiley, like a total idiot.

“The names make no sense,’ he says, “because Smiley never smiles”.

An intimate exploration of the Asian-immigrant experience, cultural identity, and family bonds, Candy and Smiley is based on genuine and genuinely ridiculous stories about Hill’s life and relationship with his parents.

In the New Year, Hill hits Slice of Life Art Gallery’s stage with his new follow-up show, kicking off a tour that is to take him throughout B.C., Alaska, Alberta, and parts of the U.S.

Hill also hosts several podcasts, including Son of Smiley and Model Mythology, the latter with Aidan Parker,
