Monsoon Festival heads into final stretch with Murals in the Market, to August 31
New works can now be seen in the public-art project by Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective and Vancouver Mural Festival
EVERY YEAR, THE Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts collaborates with various arts groups and leaders on important cultural projects. One such organization for 2021 is the Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective.
The historic market was the first of its kind in North America, and is a place where thousands of local residents have found and developed a sense of community. For the first time in its 51-year history, murals are being painted between 49th and 51st Avenues on Main Street.
In partnership with Vancouver Mural Festival, PMRC’s Murals in the Market initiative aims to facilitate storytelling along with discussions on racism and discrimination through public art. Monsoon Festival is a community partner for the project.
Curated by Jas Lally, the project features works by artists Guntaj Deep Singh, Mustaali Raj and Minahil Bukhari, Diamond Point, and Sandeep Johal.
The Monsoon Festival, a celebration of South Asian arts, comes to a close on August 31. For more information, see Monsoon Festival.
