A new live comedy and music stage, alongside video games and dining, as Cineplex launches area's first Rec Room at Brentwood
“Eats and entertainment” is the key phrase at BC’s first outpost of the cross-Canada outlet
TUCKED INSIDE Cineplex’s just-opened, 44,000-square-foot gaming, dining, and entertainment centre at Brentwood is one of the area’s newest live-performance stages.
In the luxe new venue that sits on the floor below the company’s soon-to-open VIP Cinemas, alongside 90 amusement games—including old-school games like ping pong, pool tables, Mario Kart and the World’s Largest Pac-Man—is a stage earmarked for live comedy, live bands, DJs, karaoke, and other local shows. The expansive area, called the Hall, also offers drinks and food.
Cineplex executive director of amusement and entertainment Kashif Ahmad told Stir the stage wouldn’t get into full swing until the province lifted restrictions on live events. “We want to support local acts, but also in a safe fashion,” he stressed on a tour of the site.
Alongside enhanced cleaning protocols, the venue is limiting venue capacity, spacing out the games floor, and limiting the number of tables available for sit-down dining.
Elsewhere, the Rec Room’s motto is “eats and entertainment”: full-service restaurant Three10 offers handcrafted dishes, while the Shed caters to the gaming crowd with snacks, handhelds, poutines, and made-to-order funnel cakes. Between the main bar and the Shed, guests can choose from 16 draught beers on tap, including local craft brews, and cocktails.
Visitors can book spots and rooms for special occasions. “It’s definitely an environment where you can go to celebrate occasions—anniversaries, birthdays,” says Ahmad.
Full capacity for the Rec Room, once all restrictions are lifted, is around 1,300 people.
Both the Rec Room and VIP Cinemas will face onto a one-acre events plaza. The venue and its VIP Cinemas anchor Phase One of The Amazing Brentwood redevelopment.
Cineplex currently operates eight other locations of the Rec Room, including in West Edmonton, St. John’s, and Toronto.
