Chef Robert Clark joins Organic Ocean as chief culinary officer
The cofounder of the Ocean Wise Seafood program is a champion of sustainability
CHEF ROB CLARK is a legend not just in B.C. but right across Canada for his culinary talent and his focus on ocean health.
A co-founder of the Ocean Wise Seafood program, he’s A recipient of the prestigious Murray A. Newman Award for achievement in aquatic conservation.
In 2011, Clark was named SeaWeb Sustainable Seafood Champion for his advocacy of ocean-friendly seafood; the year prior, he was appointed to the Order of Canada for his efforts to create an environmentally and economically sustainable seafood supply system.
Now, he’s the chief culinary officer of Organic Ocean.
Organic Ocean got its start over a decade ago after a group of fishermen joined forces to sustain their livelihoods, connecting the B.C.’s top seafood producers with chefs who sought out fresh, high-quality, sustainable fish. Providing seafood to leading restaurants at home and abroad, the collective branched into responsibly cultured seafood as well as products supplied by Indigenous fisheries on the strict proviso that everything meet the highest standards for sustainability and socially responsible production. It was the first seafood supplier in the world to provide DNA certification of its products’ authenticity.
With the onset of COVID-19, Organic Ocean pivoted, making its premium seafood available to everyday consumers and home cooks for the first time via contactless, refrigerated home delivery. It has expanded its line from a wide range of packs to include chowders, sashimi, shrimp burgers, poke kits (including the most excellent Chef Select Poke Marinade), and more.
In his new role, Clark will be sharing cooking techniques, recipes, information about different types of sustainable species, and more.
Clark, who co-launched the Fish Counter on Main Street and co-authored the cookbook C Food, was also a mastermind of the BC Spot Prawn Festival along with Organic Ocean co-founder Captain Steve Johansen.
To celebrate Clark joining the team, Organic Ocean is putting Skipper Chris Marshman's Spot Prawn Tails on special until May 26 while supplies last.
