A HUGE five-metre-tall inflatable urn will rise at šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl'e7énḵ Square (the Vancouver Art Gallery North Plaza) as part of this year’s Vancouver TAIWANfest, happening online and in-person downtown from September 4 to 12.

The event announced its programming this morning, with its most visible element Taiwanese artist Chin-Wen Cheng’s specially commissioned Cultures Fermented urn artwork, depicting events and traditions shaping Taiwanese and South Korean cultures.

This year’s festival focuses on artful dialogue between those two countries.

Amid TAIWANfest’s virtual programming, look for performances by The Tune, an all-female folk-percussion group from South Korea, as well as a full roster of iconic Taiwanese artists.

In-person programming includes the New World opening concert by the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra at the Orpheum Theatre on September 4. The same day sees the debut of the new documentary May Sea Turtles be with You… Always by Taiwanese filmmaker Chin-Yuan Ke, exploring how cultures and nature are tied together; it’s screened in partnership with the Vancouver International Film Festival, the Vancouver Taiwanese Film Festival, and the Museum of Vancouver.

Standup will also be on tap, with Rethink Asia: Dialogue through comedy, featuring Taiwanese Canadian comedian Ed Hill takes place on September 5 at the Annex. The fest’s closing concert presents Harmonia String Ensemble at the same venue, with a tribute to Vancouver and Kaohsiung, two harbour cities on the Pacific Rim..
