VANCOUVER CIVIC THEATRES kicks off its annual outdoor Sunset Cinema series with probably the biggest, most unabashed popcorn movie of last year.
That’s right—Top Gun: Maverick, an old-school adrenaline-filled formula blockbuster, will play on the gigantic inflatable screen atšxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn (formerly the QET Plaza) outside the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on August 2 at 9 pm. The action film is a unique blend of technological wizardry, Tom Cruise-ness, and 1980s nostalgia—well-suited to a hazy, lazy night on a blanket or lawnchair, not to mention a screen this size.
As usual, the screening is free. It’s followed by similar summer-hit fare—some of it highly family-friendly, like the Super Mario Bros. Movie on August 9 and Puss in Boots—The Last Wish on August 16.
The highlights on the roster, however, will be the wonderfully over-the-top Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Daniels Brothers’ hilarious sci-fi metaverse chop-socky adventure—and perhaps the most subversively weird and entertaining Best Picture Oscar-winner of all time; and, of course, Steven Spielberg’s vibrant, dazzlingly choreographed West Side Story redux on August 30—a film that, we assert, should only be viewed in summertime.
Keep an eye on the times through August, as they adjust for sunset, and make sure to pop down early, not only to secure your spot but to take in preshow live entertainment each evening. And VCT invites you to bring your friends, family, and even four-legged friends. Don't forget your popcorn.
