Pipe organs and Raven Chacon as Vancouver New Music announces its 50th-anniversary season
Annual festival is called Vox Organi, plus the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning Voiceless Mass
VANCOUVER NEW MUSIC is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a visit by a Nine Inch Nails artist, a fest devoted to innovative pipe-organ music, and the Vancouver premiere of a Pulitzer Prize winning work.
The already-sold-out concert by Alessandro Cortini of Nine Inch Nails fame kicks off the season with a his experimental, ambient music on October 1 and a free artist talk the next day, copresented with Chan Centre for the Performing Arts.
October 19 to 21, local and international artists take unique approaches to this city’s largest pipe organ at Pacific Spirit United Church for Vox Organi, as part of the latest installment of the Vancouver New Music festival. Look for performances by Giulio Tosti; Elena Ferrari, Barbara Lázara, and John Brennan; Sandra Boss; Blake Hargreaves; loscil and Lawrence English; gamut inc; and Sarah Davachi.
The VNM Festival also includes The Listener’s Listening: A field recording workshop with Lawrence English on October 22, 11 am to 3 pm, at Hadden Park Field House. Copresented with Publik Secrets, the guided listening activities explore memory, perception, and subjectivity, and the ways personal experiences and cultural backgrounds shape our interpretation and response to sounds.
On November 18, Vancouver New Music presents the Vancouver premiere of Pulitzer Prize for Music-winning Voiceless Mass by Diné-American composer, musician, and sound artist Raven Chacon. Staged again in Pacific Spirit United Church and making use of the massive pipe organ, the piece, true to its title, creates space for historically “unsung” voices to reclaim the space of the church, spreading an ensemble throughout the hall, creating an immersive sound experience for the audience.
Next spring, also watch for appearances by Romanian sound artist Ioana Vreme Moser (March 16) as part of the cutting-edge Parallel series, drawing on scrap metal and stones for electronic-music instruments, copresented by Vancouver Hack Space at the Annex; local interdisciplinary innovator Nancy Lee (April 4 and 5), copresented with New Works at the Annex; and DIY-synth master Afrorack (April 20) copresented with Red Gate Theatre.
Tickets go on sale for Vox Organi and Voiceless Mass starting September 15 at newmusic.org/.
