Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performs Field of Dreams in Concert, July 19 and 20
It’s the first time James Horner’s musical score has been adapted for live performance by a full symphony orchestra
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Field of Dreams in Concert on July 19 and 20 at 7 pm at the Orpheum
AFTER IT CAME out in 1989, Field of Dreams was nominated for three Academy Awards, including best picture, best adapted screenplay, and best original score. Now, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is offering Field of Dreams in Concert, marking the first time that James Horner’s beloved score has been adapted for performance by a full symphony orchestra.
The movie stars Kevin Costner as an Iowa farmer who hears a voice that says, “If you build it, he will come.” To that end, he mows down his cornfield to construct a baseball diamond, and ghosts of the sport’s greats, including “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, come out to play. Based on the 1982 book Shoeless Joe by Canadian novelist W. P. Kinsella, the film also features Ray Liotta, James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, and Burt Lancaster in his final role.
Leading the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is American-Canadian conductor Julian Pellicano, who is on the conducting staff of the National Ballet of Canada as of the 2024-25 season and who is music director and principal conductor of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. He has been a guest conductor with the Seattle Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, Orquestra de València, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, Florida Orchestra, and Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre, among others. Pellicano has helmed more than 25 live-to-film projects.
