CASSAVA FLOUR, COCONUT sugar, and pure vanilla are among the dozens of products offering a taste of Indonesia at the new Archipelago Marketplace pop-up.

Located in Gastown at the Indonesian Promotion Trade Centre (310 West Cordova Street), the shop takes its name from Indonesia’s unique geographical makeup of thousands of islands. Co-founded by Liza Wajong and David Gunawan, it came together in response to the devastating economic impact of the pandemic. They wanted to support the small- and medium-sized businesses in their home country, and also recognized a gap in availability of authentic Indonesian products in Canada.

“We curate and deliver unique and high-quality products directly from Indonesia to homes in North America,” Wajong said in a release. “Each product contains a piece of the Indonesian culture that we proudly represent and we can’t wait to share with Canada.”

Among the products are kettle-cooked tempeh chips, which are becoming more and more popular. Made of fermented soybeans, they come in flavours like barbecue, lime, and hot and spicy. Arabica Sulawesi Tana Toraja coffee comes from beans grown through organic farming on the slope of Mount Rante Karua in the Tana Toraja region of South Sulawesi, about 1,500 to 1,700 metres above sea level,

Tongkat Ali is Indonesian ginseng, an herbal remedy that the marketplace founders source from a fair-trade producer in Central Java who fair trade with local farmers in Indonesia.

“Our products are directly sourced from Indonesian producers and farmers, so they are all traceable and sustainable,” Gunawan said.

In addition to the Gastown location, Archipelago Marketplace has a presence on Amazon, which ships across Canada.

Archipelago Marketplace is supported by the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia (and its Directorate General of National Export Development Trade Attache at Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Ottawa), the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Vancouver, BNI (Bank Negara Indonesia) New York, and BRI (Bank Rakyat Indonesia) New York.
