The Capture Photography Festival presents “Flotsam” along the Arbutus Corridor Greenway until July 1

PIECES OF CORAL, GLASS, spheres, mirrors, and vintage books: Montreal-based Celia Perrin Sidarous’s “Flotsam” series bring contemplative still lifes to the five billboards along the Arbutus Greenway.

The Capture Photography Festival is presenting the images, created with medium and large format cameras. The artist explores the ideas of looking and remembering, each assemblage linking to antiquity, art history, still life, and methods of display.

Vancouverites may recall that earlier this spring, the same billboards featured a series by Vancouver artist Steven Shearer, whose photographs of people sleeping were taken down after some public complaints.

It’s unlikely that Perrin Sidarous’s images, expanded to this monumental size, will cause quite a stir; meditative yet curious in their juxtapositions, they ask passersby to slow down and take them in.
