Sai Woo launches Vancouver's first Squid Game dinner event, to October 31
The restaurant will serve a multicourse modern-Korean meal inspired by the Netflix hit
Sai Woo presents Squid Game Night, nightly through to October 31.
DISTURBING, BLOODY, AND violent: Squid Game is said to be the biggest series launch in the history of Netflix—and it’s proving to be just the thing for a dinner event over Halloween weekend in Vancouver.
The South Korean show has inspired a unique dining experience at Sai Woo, the Asian-fusion spot in the heart of Chinatown has been flooded with reservation requests. Sai Woo is already hinting that it will plan future dates given the overwhelming interest.
Squid Game is about people who are so deeply indebted that they resort to playing popular children’s games in an attempt to win money. But there’s a deadly catch: instead of simply being “out” when they’re eliminated, they’re killed, often in torturous ways.
Like all of the restaurant’s staff members, Sai Woo chef Han Seung-min will be dressed in costume each night; the Korean-Canadian culinary professional is going as Front Man.
It may be all fun and (nonlethal) games, but Sai Woo is serious about its food and will focus on modern-Korean fare for the event. The meal features six-courses, including Kantung Mushroom Salad; Squid Sausage (made with chopped sirloin, sweet-potato noodle, and bean sprouts); a dinner box with items like bulgogi and KFC (Korean Fried Chicken); and Hotteok, a sweet Korean pancake with maple syrup and vanilla ice cream.
Between courses, diners will have the chance to play three interactive games like Ppogi—which involves cutting shapes out of a dalgona, or honeycomb candy, with a needle. They’re exactly the kind of games Seung-min played during his childhood.
“The excitement for our Squid Game Nights is… Wow,” the restaurant said on social media.
