Vancouver Writers Fest goes gourmet with Granville Island Delivery Co.
You can experience the market at home for two standout festival events—but hurry, ordering deadline is October 16
IT’S TIME TO get your food orders in for the Vancouver Writers Fest.
Say what?
The festival is teaming up with Granville Island Delivery Co. for two key events to provide a taste of years past delivered right to your door.
Gourmet packages of food and drink are available for the Literary Cabaret and the Afternoon Tea. The final day to order the Granville Island goodies is October 16. (Tickets for the VWF events will still be on sale after that date.)
The Literary Cabaret, taking place October 24 at 8 pm via Zoom, is an evening of author readings and improvised songs hosted by the fest’s new musical director, Sally Zori, of Sally Zori & the Allegories. Zori is a session musician, percussionist, content creator, and transgender Iraqi who was raised in the United Arab Emirates and different parts of Canada. Joining them is poet Billy-Ray Belcourt, who will be sharing from A History of My Brief Body; poet and VWF spoken word curator Jillian Christmas (The Gospel of Breaking); author and comedian Charles Demers (who will read from his crime-fiction work, Primary Obsessions) and poet-novelist Aislinn Hunter (The Certainties).
The gourmet food and wine in the custom-made Literary Cabaret Package ($60 plus shipping) includes French demi baguette from Terra Breads; Claudel double cream brie, Nostrala by Kootenay Alpine Cheese, and Fig & Walnut Preserve by the Preservatory from Benton Brothers Cheese; garlic-pepper cashews from the Nut Merchant; dark-chocolate salted caramels from ChocolaTas; Sommelier’s Choice of wine; and more.
On October 25, it’s the Afternoon Tea live on Zoom at 3 pm. One of the fest’s signature events, it features readings by such celebrated authors as Caroline Adderson (A Russian Sister), Francesca Ekwuyasi (Butter Honey Pig Bread), Will Ferguson (The Finder), Michelle Good (Five Little Indians), Kevin Spenst (Hearts Amok), and Jack Wang (We Two Alone). Supported by the Faris family in memory of Yulanda Faris, the event has an optional add-on of eats to go with it. Among the offerings in the Afternoon Tea package ($35 plus shipping) are single-cup Cream Earl Grey from Granville Island Tea Company, two-piece finger sandwich from a Bread Affair, poppyseed and cranberry shortbread from Laurelle’s Fine Foods, mini blueberry scone and raspberry jam from Terra Breads; and sweet treats from Bon Macaron, the Lemon Square, and ChocolaTas.
The VWF wanted to partner with Granville Island Delivery Co. to support the local vendors who have been hit hard by the pandemic. (The fest doesn’t make any money from the arrangement.)
“This collaboration aligns with our core values: to support and uplift the local community,” says Michelle Ng, Granville Island Delivery Co. president and founder. “Each of our pairings supports multiple Granville Island merchants while at the same time uplifting the arts community. Each item has been chosen to match the event theme, which will ensure a wonderful interactive experience for attendees.”
