VIFF Talks features creators of Showtime's obsessed-over hit Yellowjackets, January 26
Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson talk about the cult series that follows a girls’ soccer team into a horror-laced survival epic
VIFF Talks presents Yellowjackets : Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson on January 26 at 6 pm
WHAT IS IT that has made Showtimes’s Yellowjackets some of the most obsessed-about and dissectible binge viewing during the pandemic? Is it the way its creators somehow meld horror, black comedy, survival epic, and coming-of-age story? Is it the embrace of hormonal teen angst-rage and its openness to queer relationships? Is it the way its writers parse out clues to its full mystery in a way that leaves you craving more? Or is it just that the story of what happens after a disaster rings so frighteningly true in these apocalyptic-feeling times?
Vancouver fans will get the chance to find out in the Vancouver International Film Festival’s latest online VIFF Talk, when creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson are on hand to talk about the show that centres on a high-school girls-soccer team that gets stranded in the (possibly haunted) wilderness and devolves into Lord of the Flies-like warring clans.
The discussion will look at everything from Yellowjackets’ flashback structure to its character development, soundtrack, and brilliant casting (Christina Ricci and Juliette Lewis anyone?).
Duana Taha, a TV writer and producer whose credits include Degrassi: The Next Generation, Slasher: Solstice and the podcast Show Your Work, hosts.
As usual, admittance is free; you just have to preregister here. And if you're not one of the series' 4 million addicts, you have just enough lead time to binge in preparation.
