New Works
New Works is a Vancouver-based non-profit organization that provides artist support and presentation, and is dedicated to developing communities through accessible art engagement.
New Works is a Vancouver-based non-profit, charitable organization, founded by Barbara Clausen and a like-minded group of cultural workers in 1993 as a vehicle for the development, production, and presentation of culturally diverse work that brings affordable, professional dance from around the world to local neighbourhood venues.
In 1998, New Works began to operate additionally as a dance-management organization, providing stable, affordable management services to innovative dance artists and companies, while also providing pro bono and special project assistance to many creators in the city’s dance ecology. New Works continues to play an important role in building the next generation of arts administrators by providing on-site internships, work experience, and mentorship.
Today, New Works’ annual presentation and residency series showcases a diversity of artists, including both world premiere presentations and work-in-progress sharings. New Works continues to offer artist support, taking the form of company and project management, professional development training programs (2023 Cohort Program), and new research development and project support (XR Program 2022). New Works also produces Share Dance, an annual workshop series bringing different dance styles to underserved communities across the Lower Mainland. Share Dance focuses on serving youth, newcomers and families, and minority communities.
New Works is an innovative organization that exists to support dance artists, cultivate audiences, and provide and promote diverse and accessible performance experiences. New Works strives to remove systemic barriers positioned against equity-owed practices and practitioners, including Indigenous artists.
New Works aims to be a model for supporting equity-owed artists, to be a hub for artistic excellence, and to build community through dance.
