As boba tea continues to gain fans, Vancouver’s new Bobasaur introduces DIY Bubble Tea Kits
To celebrate launch, the company is teaming up with food show Secret Sauce and raising funds for food banks
BUBBLE TEA IS nothing new, but the worldwide popularity of the tea-based drink born in Taiwan just keeps growing. How big is boba? By 2027, the global market is expected to reach US$4.3 billion.
Typically made with milk or fruit and chewy tapioca “pearls” in a range of flavours, it goes by several other names: pearl milk tea, boba juice, bubble milk tea, boba tea among them.
New to Vancouver’s bubble milk-tea scene is Bobasaur, which does things a little differently: it makes DIY Bubble Tea Kits and delivers them throughout Greater Vancouver. The goal is to make it easy for people to get their boba fix during the pandemic. Described as “restaurant-quality” bubble tea, the classic Roasted Milk Tea can be made at home in five minutes.
As part of its opening celebrations, Bobasaur is teaming up with local entrepreneur Wilson K Lee and his web-based food series, Secret Sauce, to help alleviate hunger.
All proceeds from Bobasaur’s DIY Bubble Tea Kit sales between January 19 and February 2 will go to Food Banks Canada and Feeding America. For his part, Lee is donating 100 percent of advertising revenue from his show to the campaign.
Lee’s goal is to feed at least 10,000 people in need; to date, Secret Sauce has raised enough funds to donate 4,500 meals.
Secret Sauce takes viewers behind the scenes of eight regional restaurants, including Anh & Chi, Nook, Straight & Marrow, and Fergie’s in Squamish. (Disclosure: Lee interviewed the author for one of the episodes.)
