HOLIDAY MARKETS MAY not be the same this year as in seasons past, but there’s still lots to look forward to—and ways to support local artisans.

Sweet Thea Holiday Pop-up is one such event.

Open daily till December 27 at 4305 Main Street (at 27th), the market brings together a range of products you’d normally find at places like the West Coast Christmas Show in Abbotsford, Vancouver’s Circle Craft, Make It Edmonton and Vancouver, and others in Western Canada.

Here’s a sampling of what’s on offer: holiday baking including stollen, lebkuchen, fruitcake, and cookies, from Langley’s Sweet Thea Bakery; Surrey-based Aji Gourmet Products’ salsas and guacamole; BC Garlic Growers’ freeze-dried organic garlics; syrups and cordials by Frostbites Syrup in Squamish; infused farm honeys from Yarrow’s Greendale Herb & Vine; organic mustards from Wildcraft Organics in 100 Mile House; wild-foraged mushroom products by Edmonton’s Untamed Feast; and jams and marmalades by North Vancouver’s Le Meadows Pantry.

There are also freeze-dried raspberries and blueberries, maple syrups and sugars, hand-pressed organic oils and hand-crafted chocolates; roasted nuts, and more.

Behind the pop-up is the Sweet Thea Bakery husband-and-wife duo of Thea and Laurie Mercer. The baker of the business, Thea trained under George Wagner at Nanaimo’s Malaspina College and went on to work at various esteemed spots, including Sooke Harbour House. In 2000, after completing her Red Seal certification, she started her home-based wedding cake business, Sweet Thea Cakes, while working at the Vancouver Club. The founder of Music West, Laurie is the entrepreneur. He spent several decades working in the music industry, first as a concert promoter for touring bands, then as manager for punk legends D.O.A. and booking agent for Violent Femmes and Skinny Puppy, among others.

Sweet Thea Holiday Pop-Up is open from 11 am to 6 pm daily (but stays open till 7 pm on Fridays). Many items can be pre-ordered or purchased online for mail order at www.SweetTheaPopUp.com.

To comply with public health regulations, the market has all COVID-19 safety measures in place, including limited access to the shop on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Pick-up locations are at the Main Street market, at 203 - 20540 Duncan Way, Langley (Sweet Thea Bakery), or at the Tsawwassen Quay Market (you must be taking a B.C. Ferry to access).
