The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical bolts into Vancouver, May 18 to 28
The stage adaptation of Rick Riordan’s best-selling novel features everything from giant puppets to a five-piece orchestra
CTORA Theatre presents The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical from May 18 to 28 at the JCC Norman Rothstein Theatre (Thursday through Sunday at 7 pm; Saturday through Monday at 2 pm; no performances Tuesday or Wednesday)
THE LIGHTNING THIEF: The Percy Jackson Musical will soon strike Vancouver. The musical stage adaptation of the best-selling novel by Rick Riordan follows the story of Percy Jackson, a half-blood son of a Greek god, who discovers he has extraordinary powers that he can’t control and monsters on his trail.
When Zeus’s master lightning bolt is stolen and Jackson (Brett Williams) becomes the prime suspect, he has to find and return the bolt to prove his innocence and prevent a war between the gods. However, to succeed, he has to do more than catch the thief; along with his sidekicks Annabeth Chase (Jessica Spenst) and Grover Underwood (Teddy Ngkaion), he has to travel to the Underworld and back; solve the riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and come to terms with the father who abandoned him.
The two-act full-stage musical features nine adult performers, a five-piece live orchestra playing an original rock ’n’ roll score, Ancient Greek and modern-day scene changes, lightning and sound effects, simulated fight scenes, and giant puppets. It’s recommended for audiences aged six and up.
Among the other actors are Simon Auclair-Troughton as Luke Castellan, Emily Saint as Clarisse La Rue, Claire Torrance as Silena Beauregard, and Ryan Horton as Gabe Ugliano.
Time Out New York has called the action-packed mythical adventure “worthy of the gods”; The Boston Globe called it a “blast”.
Presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals from a book by Joe Tracz, with music and lyrics by Rob Rokicki, the work features choreography by Ken Overbey and direction by Mark Carter. CTORA Theatre provides opportunities for emerging artists to perform in professionally staged productions.
