Elektra Choir
Elektra has been a groundbreaking ensemble since its founding in 1987 in Vancouver, Canada.
Under the direction of artistic director Morna Edmundson, the 45-voice adult choir is reknowned for its adventurous programming, seeking out music written specifically for adult treble voices and frequently commissioning new works. Elektra is a sought-after collaborator and performer with other cultural presenters and works with an outstanding accompanist, Dr. Stephen Smith.
Elektra's 2024/25 season marks Morna Edmundson's final season as Artistic Director and will feature her "desert island" favorites in three self-produced concerts. The season's finale, Legacy, will showcase selections from over 100 Canadian compositions and arrangements the choir has commissioned over the past three decades. The season also includes popular (and free) Reading Sessions of New Compositions and Choral Encounters.
The choir's extensive discography is available on all major streaming platforms, while Elektra's YouTube channel offers a rich variety of performance videos and concert experiences, including the stunning concert film Snewiyalth tl'a Stawk (Teachings of the Water), sung in the Squamish language with a score commissioned from Canadian-Métis composer T. Patrick Carrabré.
A multiple national prize-winning ensemble, Elektra has performed at conferences of Choral Canada, the American Choral Directors Association, Chorus America, the International Society for Music Education and the International Federation for Choral Music, where it appeared at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Sydney (1996) and Barcelona (2017). In 2018, Elektra was one of five choirs from across the country to perform in “…float…”, Choral Canada’s unique, outdoor, immersive performance experience, funded by the Canada Council’s New Chapter program.
