Studio 58
Studio 58 is the professional theatre training program at snəw̓eyəɬ leləm̓ Langara College, located in Vancouver. It offers nationally recognized conservatory-style training for both actors and production personnel.
Studio 58 began as a Theatre Arts course in 1965, with classes first held on the King Edward Campus of Vancouver Community College. The department moved to new facilities on the Langara Campus in 1970 and became known as Studio 58 (referring to the room number of the theatre space). In 2023, its theatre received a high-quality renovation that saw the replacement of seats, improvements to the entrances and surrounding spaces, and other upgrades.
The school operates its own theatre and presents four full-length and two indie-style productions annually. Professional directors and designers are hired to work on each production. Shows range from large-scale musicals like Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods to classics like Shakespeare’s The Tempest and Federico García Lorca’s Blood Wedding, as well as new Canadian works and experimental student-led productions like the annual Risky Nights indie shows and the FourPlay presentation of original scripts by Studio 58 students.
With two dynamic streams inside one exciting program, Studio 58 offers a choice for future professionals. The Acting Program is a three-year, full-time course for those who want a career as a professional actor in theatre and film/TV. The Production Program is a three-year, full-time course for those who want a career in the technical side.
