Anthem Pizza thrashes onto Vancouver’s food scene with punk and purpose
The cloud kitchen gives back to the community with its hard-core pies
IF PUNK HAS always been about doing things your way, then Vancouver’s Matt Thompson is doing pizza his way. The founder of Anthem Pizza is running the new “cloud” (aka ghost) kitchen as a community-driven enterprise, donating to different charities each quarter. Initially, partial proceeds from pizza sales are going to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Unison Benevolent Fund, which helps Canadian musicians in times of hardship or illness by providing counselling and emergency relief.
Available for pickup and delivery daily from 3 to 10 pm, Anthem’s 14-inch pies come in varieties named after legends like David Bowie, the Beastie Boys, Iggy Pop, and the Ramones. There’s Hunky Dory (with prosciutto, pineapple jam, banana peppers, and mozzarella), for instance; Sabotage (chorizo, pepperoni, roasted chicken, prosciutto, and mozza), and Blah Blah Blah (a white pie with Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, fior di latte, Grana Padano, Provolone, and Gorgonzola). I Want to be Sedated has white truffle oil with a mushroom medley, shredded mozza, Alfredo Sauce, Grana Padano, and fior di latte. There are others, as well as Straight Edge Salads and What the Cluck Wings.
“The inspiration behind the creation of Anthem was not only to respond proactively to the COVID-19 pandemic by pivoting to a takeout-only model but also to do something good for local people and projects that need the love now more than ever,” Thompson said in a release. “This is our Anthem — sung loud, hardcore and rebellious.”
We love that Anthem's out-of-the-box boxes feature original, limited-edition works that are inspired by current events by local artists like David Bircham. There’s even a tribute to the late SNFU punk icon Chi Pig.
