Every week, Stir Wine Pairing suggests a drink to go with a Vancouver performance.

The lowdown

Genevieve Fleming and Melissa Oei share the role in this one-person play by Ginna Hoben. Directed by Barbara Tomasic (with livestream direction by Raugi Yu), it tells story of Mary, who dives into the world of dating after seeing her fiancé kiss another woman on national TV. Date after date, she starts to lose hope over ever finding a match but ends up meeting a special someone. The Arts Club describes the show as putting a “Sex and the City spin on the holiday season”.

The pairing

Based in Okanagan Falls, Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars made its 2016 Brut Rosé using the Méthode Traditionnelle—the pinnacle of the winemaking style from Champagne, which was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status in 2015. Its wines show up on lists at some of Vancouver’s best restaurants, like L’Abbatoir and Boulevard Kitchen and Oyster Bar,

A blend of 67 percent Pinot Noir and 33 percent Chardonnay, the crisp, delicate pink sparkler is redolent of wild strawberries. (It’s $39.99 via the winery.)

Why crack a bottle of this beautiful bubbly? Because this show feels like it’s kicking off the holidays, and that’s something to celebrate. And because 2020 is almost over. It’s been a dreadful year for everyone, and the arts industry in particular has been hammered by COVID-19. We’ll take any chance we can get to toast to brighter days ahead while supporting top local talent on the virtual stage.

The menu

Given that the arts needs some fight behind it now more than ever, we’re ordering from Anthem Pizza, a new “cloud” (aka “ghost”) kitchen that serves up punk rock-inspired “pizza with a purpose”. See our story here. If you don’t think pink bubbles go with pizza, just trust us on this one.
