SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs and CreativeMornings presents CreativeMornings Vancouver: Meeru Dhalwala on June 2 from 8:30 to 10 am at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts

PEOPLE FIND INSPIRATION in different places, and Vancouver chef Meeru Dhalwala gets it while she’s out running in her neighbourhood, a time when she says her brain can dance.

That’s one of the nuggets the local restaurateur, author, activist, and mom—who’s best known for her role as co-founder and -owner of Vij’s and Rangoli restaurants—will share in the next edition of CreativeMornings Vancouver. She will be discussing what creativity means to her through the global series’ theme for June of “reverie”.

Dhalwala moved to the West Coast in 1995. In addition to running the kitchens at both aforementioned eateries, she wrote all three Vij’s cookbooks. In 2021, she started My Bambiri (baby) Foods, sourcing from B.C. organic farmers and selling the products on income-based pricing, with three cost options depending on a family’s finances. She has also partnered with Food Stash Foundation to sell My Bambiri at their markets for low-income families who face economic and social barriers. Last fall, Dhalwala relaunched Joy of Feeding, her annual international food fair at the UBC Farm Centre for Sustainable Food Systems.

A mother of two grown daughters with ex-husband Vikram Vij, Dhalwala has a master’s in science in development studies from Bath University and is on the board of directors for the Green Party of Vancouver.
