The lowdown

Comedy Here Often?, the comedy arm of Vancouver’s 604 Records, is getting into the holiday spirit with The 12 Days of Feministmas. The sketches—drag, burlesque, comedy, you name it—are all by local comics.

One sketch comes out each day at 11 a.m., but once released you can watch anytime via YouTube. On the festive lineup are Amy Grindhouse, Ashlee Ferral, Tin Lorica, Rae Lynn Carson, Ambika Vas, April O'Peel, Em Cooper, Emily Bilton, Tammy Hu, Lace Cadet, Kelby DeLaet, and Alannah Brittany.

The pairing

If life is like a box of chocolates—you never know what you’re going to get—trying new wines can be a crapshoot. Some are so good you take a photo of the label to remember for next time; others get set aside for cooking. VinAmité Cellars’ Compass falls firmly in the former category. It brings on one of those whoa! moments—a brilliantly pleasant surprise. The family-run winery is in Oliver, where winemaker Catherine Coulombe (whose parents are founders and artist sister is also an owner) created this earthy, leathery, and chocolaty red. Savoury and assertive, it’s a blend of 48 percent Merlot, 27 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 16 percent Malbec, and nine percent Cabernet Franc. At $35.90, it sells out every year.

The food

Temper Chocolate & Pastry’s Advent Calendar. Since it’s a wild guess as to what the 12 Feministmas will have in store on any given day, it only seems fitting to turn to an advent calendar for a small, sweet treat to go with that glass of red wine.

Based in West Vancouver, acclaimed chocolatier Steven Hodge has created these artful calendars with mini confections and chocolates behind each window. They’re $65 for an assortment or you can customize it with your preferred flavours starting at $70. He even designed the boxes with ingredients from his kitchen. As he puts it, who needs paint when you have cocoa butter?.
