The lowdown
There’s something extraordinarily uplifting about seeing Chor Leoni’s Men Choir in joyous song. One Another, the vocal ensemble’s newest digital concert, is just that, now available for viewing until June 27.
Just like at the raucous VanMan Summit, Chor Leoni joins more than 100 young singers from the choir’s youth outreach programs—only this time out, they bring their voices together through the power of technology.
The free concert features Chor Leoni and its Emerging Choral Artists Program plus MYVoice participating choirs: Burnaby Central Chamber Choir A, North Surrey Secondary Chamber Choir (Polaris), Seycove Secondary Senior Chamber Choir, St. Thomas More Collegiate Chamber Singers (RICE), and St. Thomas More Collegiate Chamber Singers (MORE).
The food
This high-energy show screams summertime, which is why we’re thinking of Kinton Ramen. It recently introduced a new menu item just for summer, and Amaze Mazemen is not your everyday noodle dish.
This brothless ramen comes with seasoned thick noodles tossed in sesame oil and grated garlic. They’re topped with pork shoulder, pork belly, onsen tamago (an egg cooked softly in soy broth), corn, bonito flakes, shredded nori, shredded chili, scallions, and mayonnaise.
When you break the onsen tamago into the bowl and stir it all up with the mayo, the effect is akin to creamy pasta. Think carbonara only with a Japanese twist, the dish “ramen-ized” with the shredded nori and bonito flakes.
Amaze Mazemen ($14.95) is available until August 30 for dine-in, takeout, and delivery. (Until June 27, the chain is offering 33 percent off the delivery fee when you order directly through order.kintonramen.com.)
The pairing
To balance out the ramen’s salty, subtly spicy flavours, Red Rooster Winery’s Rosé 2020 works well. Made with 100-percent Malbec grapes that were foot-stomped, soaked, lightly pressed, and cool-fermented in a stainless steel vat, the wine is dry and refreshing. Elaine Vickers became a winemaker at the winery on Naramata Bench Road in the Okanagan Valley on ancestral kɬsəlxʷikn̓, Syilx/Okanagan Nation territory in 2019, with more than a decade of experience to her name.
As the winery evolves, so do its labels; they no longer have their namesake rooster emblazoned on them but now showcase factors like growth, harvest, and maturation characteristics through artful images. The Rosé is $24.99 online.
